1,500m2 IKO Hot Melt System Provides Roof for New Residents

IKO Permatec Hot Melt Waterproofing System has been specified and installed onto the roofs of three residential apartment blocks in South East London.

The versatile and durable system was applied onto 1,500m2 of roof area at Orchard Lodge – a new housing complex developed by Fairview New Homes Ltd on the outskirts of the city centre. Essex-based contractors, Contour Roofing Ltd, undertook months of planning as well as product training with IKO to ensure its team was confident in the quality and safe application of the hot melt system. Despite specifying other IKO PLC products previously, this was the first time they had used this particular waterproofing solution.

Solution and Installation
Firstly, Contour Roofing Ltd applied IKO Permascreed to the cambered pre-cast concrete planks on the roof areas. Designed to provide drainage falls, IKO Permascreed also offers a stable base for the specified waterproofing system. A purpose-built 18 tonne hot charge transporter delivered IKO Permascreed direct to the site ready for use.

The flexibility and fast drying times of the IKO Permascreed System was ideal for this new build project, as a quick installation was vital to ensure internal trades could access the new apartments to complete their works so they were ready on time for the new residents.

Then, the first coat of IKO Permatec was applied, followed by a reinforcement layer before the second coat of IKO Permatec was installed.

An IKO enertherm EPS Insulation layer was also used, which is suitable for use on green roofs and A+ rated in the BRE Green Guide. Coupled with IKO Permascreed Mastic Asphalt Levelling Solution, IKO Permatec Waterproofing System formed the ideal base for a sedum green roof finish, which was supplied and installed by Sky-Garden.

The programme on site was much more streamlined because of this and it minimised any significant delays to other trades.”

Contracts Manager at Contour Roofing, Joe McCanna, concluded: “The project was completed on time and within budget to a really high standard – everyone was extremely impressed of how quickly the roofs were finished.

“The ease of application of the IKO Permascreed also meant that precise falls were easy to achieve and the IKO Permatec roof finish could be applied within a few hours of installation.”
