Project Description

Coalhouse Fort is an artillery fort in the eastern English county of Essex. It was built in the 1860s to guard the lower Thames from seaborne attack. It stands at Coalhouse Point on the north bank of the river, at a location near East Tilbury that was vulnerable to raiders and invaders.

A 20 year guarantee was a requirement for new waterproof roof. IKO Permaphalt was the chosen waterproofing as it gave the ideal combination of long term durability, increased fatigue resistance, improved temperature stability and ease of installation.

Whilst work was undertaken it was stipulated that it must remain weatherproof at all times and removal of existing waterproofing was only to be done if it could be made watertight in the same day.

Solution and Installation

IKO Permaphalt Waterproofing was chosen for the roof areas, as mastic asphalt is the ideal solution for roof areas with various shapes and sizes, incorporating channels and a barrel roof area. Also there were numerous repairs carried out to other existing asphalt roof areas around the fort.

The material had to be heated in the asphalt mixer in the courtyard and then transported to the roof areas via an electronic hoist. Despite this challenge the project was completed on time; it was started on the 16th July 2018 and completed on the 5 September 2018.

The main build-up area used a 20mm thick, 2 coat IKO Permaphalt flat roof specifications with associated details to upstands. The barrel roof area used a 20mm thick, 3 coat IKO Permaphalt on Expanded Metal Lathing (EML) drilled and fixed to the substrate.

All areas of the roof were then painted with a solar reflective paint.
