1200m2 Podium Deck and Walkway, High Performance Waterproof Repair

Project Description
IKO and Monarch Roofing were consulted by both Keir – Roberts Limbrick Architects & The Jockey Club as the existing podium decks were leaking and surface rainwater was filtering through the pre formed concrete structure and dripping onto the race visitors below, this was prevalent on the bridge walkway and around the area of the Queens enclosure.

IKO Polimar FCS Waterproofing System was chosen due to it’s fast curing, highly durable and flexibility. The system is a high performance PMMA coating with fast curing properties reducing the installation time to hours rather than days, ideal when working in areas with regular foot traffic. Once applied IKO Polimar FCS is waterproof, UV resistant, seamless, and resistant to dilute acids and alkalis, oil, petrol and diesel.

Solution and Installation
The challenges posed with this project were, the works could only take place when there was no race meeting and each section had to be complete and the site completely cleared before the next meeting. The Jockey Club were adamant that they wanted the coloured walkway broken into zones with demarcation strips in a grey finish to replicate the original Aluminium edged zones. This proved difficult without the aid of some form of aluminium t-bars which would have compromised the waterproofing integrity of the system, this was overcome by the skilful application of a dark grey finish band of
waterproofing.

The contractor also had to recreate the levels within the substrate to avoid ponding water on the walkways. The quartz finish had to be attractive but also coarse enough to provide an anti-slip surface but not too coarse as to be abrasive when walked upon by the many thousands of race goers.
